The road ahead.
We started with one car. Here is how CAN Opener grows into a software layer for every vehicle.
From prototypeto production.
Here's exactly when things ship — and how you can help make it happen.
Development Begins
- Initial hardware architecture developed
- Multiple PCB revisions prototyped and tested
- Nexus app enters TestFlight testing
Vehicle Specification
- Develop a standardized vehicle specification
- Translate vehicle-specific signals into common interfaces
- Expand compatibility across supported vehicles
Kickstarter Campaign
- Launch the CAN Opener Kickstarter campaign
- Demonstrate working hardware and software
- Prepare all three models for production
Mass Production & Local Scripting
- Manufacturing begins across all three models
- Introduce on-device Lua scripting
- Run automations directly on CAN Opener, offline
Standard Edition Ships
The Standard Edition starts shipping to backers.
Fleet and Network Connectivity
- Enable cellular remote connectivity
- Add vehicle status and telemetry
- Introduce fleet and multi-vehicle management tools

Designed for a wide range of vehicles.
CAN Opener is being designed to support popular makes including the ones below. Compatibility varies by make, model, model year, network architecture, and individual feature — we use standardized interfaces where possible while building vehicle-specific support underneath our Hardware Abstraction Layer. A detailed compatibility database will track exactly which vehicles and features are supported as development progresses.
We'd rather be upfront about this.
Safety boundaries
CAN Opener will not support control of safety-critical powertrain or driving systems. Automation and control are limited to supported accessory and non-safety-critical equipment.
Vehicle variance
Vehicles vary between manufacturers, models, and model years, so feature availability and compatibility will differ. Some functionality may need additional testing, hardware, or future updates as coverage expands.
Your responsibility
CAN Opener is open and extensible — you can build your own software, scripts, and hardware modifications. You are responsible for making sure anything you build is safe, legal, and never interferes with the safe operation of the vehicle.

We are early, open, and building in public. Back the campaign to help fund production, or get in touch if you want to build with us.
